Philosophy, by Kevin Perry

Philosophy is to question everything. More than a lifestyle, larger than any single idea, broader than a conviction, philosophy is the love of exploration, of knowledge, of uncertainty, and of that cornerstone of free thinking: doubt. Kevin Perry’s “Philosophy” takes the reader on a grand tour of life’s biggest questions, examining all that the world’s greatest philosophers have said about life and death, love and loss, language, art and God, to name a few.

Philosophy is a great companion and a roadmap to navigate life’s major milestones, including:

How to make sense of death
What loving someone or something means
The effect of art on our lives
What role language plays in understanding the world
How do our ideas affect our actions

Terrific reference book on the personalities that we associate with Philosophy: excellent format, easy readability.
By Lauren
Kevin Perry has produced an excellent reference book on the personalities that we associate with the subject of philosophy. The book has an easy to understand format that encourages you to become familiar on a basic level with notable philosophers grouped by area of influence – Life, Death, Art, Knowledge, Time, Language, Love, God, Self, and Free Will – and then offers bios on the most commonly known philosophers.
I love that Mr. Perry included some of the more colorful philosophers. I was tickled that he gave a nod to Diogenes The Cynic and offered a synopsis that was free of judgement without being dry. I appreciated that the author presented each philosopher in an overview that encourages the reader to want to explore the key works that are listed at the end of each philosopher’s section. I enjoyed the chapter introductions that were thoughtfully written, as well as the informational time lines in each chapter.
I think that this book is a dynamite tease – small tantalizing bios that give an excellent overview but that stop short of really letting you sink your teeth into understanding the context of each philosopher. On the up side of that, you don’t have a chance to get bored with any one philosopher, or philosophical subject area, as you’re reading the book.
My favorite quote from the whole book was found in the first paragraph of the foreword – “Philosophy is the education of grownups”. This book is the perfect first step toward starting that education and will have you bookmarking pages to go back to, and will have you really hungering to want to explore, in depth, many of these remarkable people.
I received this book for free in exchange for an unbiased review: I love the easy format, the excellent chapter introductions, and the fact that far from being bored with the subject, I found that I could not wait to read more about several of the philosophers that were featured.

Understanding Philosophy
By Fuad R Qubein
It is somewhat surprising for an activity like philosophy which has been with us for over 2500 years, to be still so misunderstood by so many. Asked if she would consider philosophy as a major, a premed student said : What ?! To sit under the trees and talk about stupid stuff? Another student seriously thought that philosophy is only for the rich who don't need to work and have lots of time to talk. The question "What is philosophy and what do philosophers do?" is repeatedly being asked by prospective students, and others as well.

In a nutshell, philosophy is an activity devoted to the pursuit of knowledge. It is concerned with the world we live in and asks questions about all facets of our lives. The philosopher asks: What is knowledge? What is truth? What is justice? What is love? and above all : What is the meaning of life? Granted, these are not easy questions to answer and it is not unusual to find different philosophers come up with different answers. But the search for these answers is itself a mind opener and enlightening in itself. To show us the wide range covered by philosophy the author takes the reader through ten chapter (with topics like: Life, Knowledge, Art, Free Will, Love, God, Death...) and presents the views of those philosophers in each chapter.

As we recall, the search for true knowledge began with the old Greek philosophers ( Socrates, Plato, Aristotle...) who depended on questions and answers to extract the truth and, while in the process, to reveal the fallacies and inconsistencies. Socrates, using this approach cleverly, exposed the fallacies of the ruling officials at the time causing them much public embarrassment. In a seemingly revengeful response this ultimately led to his conviction, imprisonment and death by poisoning. (Even philosophising can be dangerous!).

Equally intriguing to the non philosopher is what exactly do philosophers do (other than carrying on intelligent discussions)? Some in the past had maintained that philosophers don't need to work. Lately, however, they have been appreciated in businesses where the use of strict logic is required, not least of all in the IT business. Teaching is another option with growing demand - in one medium size university in the US no less than 27 philosophy teachers are listed. Other than that philosophers continue their traditional task : to enlighten human beings - to show them how to ask questions, and how to analyse, criticise, and identify discrepancies and inconsistencies. In one recent book entitled "76 Fallacies" written by another philosopher, Michael LaBossiere, the author lists all kinds of false ideas and assumptions commonly used in public to show the reader the different forms of fallacies and how to recognise them and avoid them.

If philosophy is intended to enlighten us, what exactly have philosophers done to help people face the struggles and sufferings of their daily lives? Unfortunately, not much. Of all the philosophers we met in this book (80) only one, Marcus Aurelius (180 AD) paid attention to people's daily worries and anxieties. He basically adopted the key features of the Stoics (initiated with the Greek philosopher Zeno, 332 BCE). Using concepts similar to that of the Buddha's ( meditation, breathing techniques, yoga) Aurelius preached calming the mind with detached self-control. A key feature is to acquiesce to forces beyond our control and to embrace our fate. His famous directive:

"Accept the things to which fate binds you,
love the people with whom fate brings you
together - but do this with all your heart ! "

Great coffee table book
By Amanda G
Definitely an interesting book to read. Each page highlights a different philosopher with their name and photo as well as a write up of of each philosophers thoughts on a variety of subjects. Not only is this an entertaining read, but it's also fairly educational. Everyone likes to associate quotes to ways they are feeling throughout life and this book is basically a giant book of zen and positive thoughts and affirmations. Great coffee table book!
